Using the Apostles' Creed as his starting point, Cardinal Ratzinger (aka Pope Benedict XVI) wrote Introduction to Christianity in 1968 to elucidate the foundations of Christianity for modern readers. It's rich with theology and history, but don't let that deter you from picking up this classic. It should be on your reading list!
